2008 3rd Annual Spring “Kids & Trees” Planting Program
The Newburyport Tree Committee announces that the Third Annual Spring Planting of new trees is currently scheduled for the weekend of April 18. Between 150-200 small trees will be planted on our city streets.
Partnering with the committee are Andy Willemsen and the students of the River Valley Charter School, who have been working all winter collecting tree sites. At 1 p.m. on Friday, April 18, there will be a meeting and planting demonstration at the Charter School on Low Street.
This year’s Program Co-ordinator, Nicole Salemi, is also accepting requests from residents for plantings either in the tree strips in front of their homes or (preferred) in the residents lawn adjacent the sidewalk. Those requesting trees must make a commitment to watering the trees for two years
E-mail requests for trees to: Nicole.salemi@gmail.com.
This year the planting demonstration will be given by Javier Gil of J.Gil Organic Landscaping, the Mayor and City Council are invited as well as the general public.
On Saturday, May 3, trees will be planted in the selected sites by River Valley students and parent teams. The planting event is great fun and residents are invited to come out and meet and “root” for the planters!
Here’s a list of trees for planting and links to the Uconn Plant Base for photographs and more information about them.
